To Aru Majutsu no Index – Episode 3 and 4 [DOUBLE REVIEW]
Hello everyone. It has been quite some time since I wrote a review. I know it’s wrong of me to blame it on my schoolwork and lack of time and all, but what the heck, I’m still going to do it. :D Alright. Time for me to get to my 1st DOUBLE REVIEW. (Again, zenical procratinates with this post!! YAY)
Episode 3
Quick Summary: Index is still injured after being found brutally slashed in the back at the end of Episode 1. Touma brought Index to see Komoe-sensei as only magic can save Index and most of the kids in the city are psychic users. (note: psychic users cant use magic). Index, in recovery mode, gives Komoe instructions on how to cast a basic Sanctuary spell to save Index’s life.
Magic Circles are essential in magic.
Despite an intial disbelief in magic, Index’s condition compels Komoe to believe in magic and finally casts Sanctuary successfully to heal Index’s wound. (In the form of an angel appearing. :D)
Tenshi-sama.
On the next day, Touma visits Index at Komoe’s apartment. Komoe decides to step out to get some groceries while Touma and Index chat, on the condition that they reveal everything to her when she gets back. When she returns however, she purposely decides to forget about the event.
During the night, Touma and Index decide to visit a public bath, however, after mocking Index’ short stature and maturity, Index decides to launch her famous ‘Teeth attack’ on him and runs off. While Touma walks slowly to follow her, he soon realises that everyone around his has dissappeared. No cars, no people. Suddenly, someone appears from behind, the mysterious swordswoman, Kanzaki Kaori.
Kanzaki Kaori enters.
Thoughts: The show is moving wayyyy too slow. They spent what…. half an episode exploring Komoe’s ability to use magic, the wonderful effects of Sanctuary? This is too slow. When I picked up the show for watching and reviewing, I had expected the show to move at the pace of Rental Magica. Rental Magica had Adillisiato keep me on, even on filler episodes. This show has loli Komoe. No thank you. :(
Well, I am how pleased that Kaori made an apperance and it looks like she’ll be doing some fighting in Episode 4.

:-o This picture reminds me of Ga-Rei Zero, where everyone’s gonna die soon.
Episode 4
Quick Summary: Trapped in an empty town dimension, Touma soon discovers that this is caused by Runes casted by Kaori. A battle ensures between Touma and Kaori. It is evident in the battle, the difference in power between Touma and Kaori, not like the battle between Touma and Stiyl where Touma completely overpowered a cocky Stiyl. During the battle, Kaori reveal an important piece of information about Index.
Windcutter. ATTACK DI SQUALO. (Hitman Reborn Reference)
Hax. That’s so obviously Belphagor’s metal wires. :( (Hitman Reborn Reference)
Index has a gift/curse known as complete memory. This means that everything she sees, she remembers. The normal human brain forgets things after a while. However, Index cannot do that. As such, the 103,000 volumes of magic books that are memorized in her, take up 85% of her brain, leaving 15% of it left for her to remember other stuff. Due to this, Index has to have her memory erased every year, so that her 15% of her brain does not get used up to the max, and her brain explodes. (Ok I know this whole paragraph made no sense, but I don’t think I can phrase it any better.)
Studying is evil.
As such, Kaori and Stiyl, Index’s friends, decide that it is best they kill her now, then have to have her forget everything year after year. Touma’s stubborness causes Kaori to go mad and lash out all her fustrations on him. He soon faints and finds him awake the next morning in Komoe’s home.
Index decides to nurse Touma back to health, due to all his injuries but ends up spilling rice on his head. Suddenly, at the door, 2 familliar voices are heard. Stiyl and Kaori. They have come for Index and Index, thinking that they’re here to injure Touma again, offers up herself to protect Touma.
Nice one.
Index: “No Entry. “
Thoughts: Hehe. Kaori ish awesome. Her ‘windcutter’ ability reminds me of a character from Claymore. Her ability to play with thin, near invisibile metal wires, remind me of Belphagor from Hitman Reborn. Hehe. A combination of the 2 powers = the ultimate swordswoman.
Even though I’m praising Kaori so much, this episode was still pretty much lacklusture, due to the fact that the ‘true battle’ lasted only 5 minutes, and the rest was just the same material repeating itself for the next 15 minutes. Yup. It was Touma taking slashes from Kaori without dying for 20 whole minutes.
It was the last 2 minutes of the episode that put a smile on my face, because things look to be interesting in Episode 5.
