Busou Renkin

Busou Renkin
Episodes: 26
Genres: Shounen, Supernatural, Action
Aired: Oct 5, 2006 to Mar 29, 2007
Producer: Geneon

Originally someone recommended that I watch this series when they discovered that I’m a huge fan of Rurouni Kenshin. Busou Renkin was made by the same author. In the last three years since its been recommended I’ve lost it once when my external hardrive died, and another time when my computer required to be restored. I decided I needed to finally sit down and watch this series before something else catastrophic happened.

The basic plot is a mixture of Bleach, Shakugan no Shana, and a sprinkle of Fullmetal Alchemist. The unlucky protagonist of our series, Mutou Kazuki, runs into a mysterious young woman name Tokiko… and dies… only to realize he has been revived with a new amazing power.  His heart was ripped out of his chest by a homunculus, but Tokiko replaces his heart with a Kakugane, an alchemy based creation that has the power to transform into a weapon based on the holder’s will. Kazuki joins Tokiko and the Alchemy army to put a stop to the Humunculus which cause death and destruction. As the story progresses we realize that the battle between Homunculus and Alchemist isn’t as simple as black and white.

To be completely honest, this is one of the most unoriginal anime I’ve ever forced myself to sit all the way through. I won’t say it was an awful anime, but it certainly wasn’t amazing either. By the end of the series I wasn’t really watching anymore; I started skipping to more important scenes because I just wanted to see the ending and be over with it.

The characters were typical. Kazuki is like any other male protagonist in a shounen series. He starts off weak, but with his strong will he becomes as strong as he can to save the world. Tokiko is basically a less amusing clone of Rukia from Bleach. There are several typical undeveloped “School Friends,” and various boring “army comrades” as well, but their presence only made things worse. The only character I truly enjoyed was Chouno; the Neutral/Bad Rival of the story who is gay for Kazuki, and that is only because I’ve never seen a main character  run around in a Butterfly mask and tight tights. Its pretty low when something like that is the most original aspect of your series.

In the end the only real feeling I was left with was disappointment that a series made by the same person as Rurouni Kenshin would have such terrible stereotypical character development. Perhaps if the story was shorter it would have made a better impression.

On a last note, the opening song is more memorable than the entire series xD
I will give a cookie to any one who can help get this terrible thing out of my head.
Wohohohoho Wohohohoho Dadadadadada! Wohohohoho Wohohohoho Dadadadadada!

Ah Buso Renkin…… the Manga is actually better, but you can’t take it seriously, at least to me you shouldn’t. The Opening song is probably one of the reasons why i find it to be more of a comedic series than serious one. Then again, i love Nobuhiro Watsuki, so perhaps i’m biased since i like Rurouni Kenshin. Either way, if you want a “typical shounen action story” this is probably a good one to pick.

On a side-note… you have to give the creator some points for some of the oddest/funniest villains in a series like this. lol Watsuki is very odd himself anyway lol

^ Typical Shounen action story is the perfect words for it xD

And… I did give points for Papillon (Or however you spell that)
I even gave him the op image for being the best character in the entire show LOL xD

Lol yes. Papillon…. oh boy. In the Manga he’s hilarious. I never got around to finishing the anime though, but if they kept it as close to the original story as it had been while i was, then you already know. XD

I also got more interested in watching this because it’s by the author of Rurouni Kenshin xD It was stereotypical indeed, but I had been entertained~ It wasn’t annoyingly stereotypical to me to the point I couldn’t bear it anymore. Hehe. I really liked this anime xD Papillon still disturbs me though . . . but he amuses me at the same time. Haha!

^ The only thing that disturbed me about Papillon is where he put his Kakugane when he wasn’t using it xP

But I suppose it can’t be helped… those tights were probably too tight for pockets.
Although I’m sure they had much more space than his bathing suit xP

Haha. Ahhh this series. I think it was one of the first series I caught, way before I caught all the other Shounen series, hence it was ok for me.

Papillon is definitely one of the key highlights of the show.

Busou Renkin was a series that I’ve almost considered dropping, especially after Victor starts kicking in. Papillon… Very odd character but also very different and interesting – comedic but is also smart when it comes to crucial parts.

I think it’s one of those series where mangas are much better than anime due to the 25/6 episode duration, meaning they have to alter a lot to fit in the appropriate length. Very common like other shounen action series, and it’s a pity.
