EA Is Getting Hit Hard – Layoffs!?

Recently, Electronic Arts, one of the world’s biggest game publisher, has been hit by layoffs as the company suffered a $391 million loss. Because of this, 1, 500 employees had been fired which is actually 17% of its global workforce. That is a really big number…

With that many employees get laid off, EA claimed that in return they can save $100 million annually. However, it is not just employees that are being “sacrificed”. Additionally, EA had to scrap (not sure temporarily or permanently) a dozen games. It has not been confirmed which games had been affected, but I’m sure the more anticipated ones like Crysis 2 are probably safe.

Despite The Sims 3’s release in June and Madden NFL 10 in August, EA is still making a loss. Well to be honest, not many games published by EA has caught my attention really, or has made me want to buy the games. Maybe they should work on publishing titles that will actually sell, instead of going for new intellectual properties like Mirror’s Edge or Dragon Age: Origins. Oh do not get me wrong though, both of those games are decent, however they are also new titles and so not many people may take notice of it.

Let’s take for example Modern Warfare 2 (I’m sorry for people who are sick of hearing this title, but it IS the big thing now >.<). The main thing that is helping the game’s upcoming sales record is thanks to the fact that it is part of the Call of Duty franchise. This is because the franchise is well-known and therefore any new addition to it will be noticed. I’m not saying it is all thanks to the franchise name though, because I’m sure that Activision and Infinity Ward’s names will also play a part in the sales.

That is just my take on EA’s situation now. Please feel free to post your opinion on this =).

You’d think setting only three usages per CD-Key was meant for more than just pissing people off…

ea has always been a giant ripoff, with a few good apples. activision is following in it’s shadow, though it’s reaching the final climax

Yes!!! I was really angry at that three usage limitation as well >=(.

Lol the only problem I have with Activision is all their “Hero” games, ESPECIALLY Guitar Hero. The game is not bad, but there are just way too many versions out there that a new Guitar Hero release probably won’t feel any special…

I don’t play that many games, but afaik EA has been on a downhill run for the past few years. Many gmes published by EA are notorious to have bugs after bugs, which means patching is a constant thing to be faced. CD-Key and usage limitations (and the notorious SecuROM). It has been known that EA is on a huge deficit recently, so axeing a lot of jobs away is inevitable I suppose.

Will they get back on the feet with titles such as Battlefield Bad Company 2? Well we will see.

I’m more expecting Tiberian Twilight since I’m not a shooter fan. They said the team is expected to be laid off after the release because said game closes the book on the series released in 1995

“Oh, after you finish it you can leave, we don’t want you back here.”

Yeah, who’s going to ACTUALLY put in effort after hearing that? Especially with the game being planned for release only next year.
