Hironobu Sakaguchi’s ‘Last Story’

Hironbu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy franchise, may be journeying into his “Last Story” in the video game industry. He was involved in every Final Fantasy games from 1 to 10 before his resignation from Square in 2003. A year later, he founded Mistwalker. To some it may not be a big deal, but for those who are long-time fans of his games, this news may be quite an impact.

What may be Sakaguchi’s last game, The Last Story is a role playing game being developed for the Nintendo Wii. According to Wikipedia, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said that this game is “a new form of RPG by choosing the universal theme of human emotion”. With that being said, I really hope it will have tons of memorable dramatic set pieces! Sorry, I am a sucker for tear jerking stories >.<.

The game takes place in an island called Ruri Island. It is governed by a person called Count Arganon. Just something to point out for fun, some of you may notice the title art bears similarities to the Final Fantasy ones.

This is the trailer for the game. As you can expect from most JRPG, the visuals are stunning. What is more, it seems that the framerate is really good too. Some gameplay was revealed in the trailer as well. It looks like you can visit different towns and the battles are in real time. There is also some sort of cover-base system during battles which interests me as to how it will play out.

So far the game does not seem to be that popular, but hopefully that changes overtime when more information about the game is released. The Last Story will be out for the Nintendo Wii probably later this year.

*Update: It seems like it was just a misinterpretation in the translation. Here is the official translation from the English Mistwalker website:

“The energy poured into this project by the development team and I are 120%. I’m hoping you can understand that, however on the other hand, I feel worried and nervous like sending my child on a trip alone. Emotionally it feels like this is my last work, while pouring everything I have gotten into this project. Never regret, but now “I’m enjoying”; furthermore, aiming towards completion. The sense of “This is it” relaxes my shoulders, its pleasant feeling to conduct an orchestra by the sense of my intuition.”

So what Sakaguchi really meant, was that he is going to treat this game as his last to further emphasize on the team’s 120% effort.
