“Heavy Rain Changed My Life”

Those were the words that came from Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood associate producer, Jean-Francois Boivin.

Jean-Francois Boivin told Videogamer he felt that in the future, video games and movies will merge into one entertainment medium. He went on to praising Heavy Rain as being able to blur the line between them. He adds on:

“It changed my entire look outlook on interactive entertainment,” said Boivin. “This is a glimpse of how we’re going to bring the video game industry to the next level of commercialism. I can see my mum playing a game like Heavy Rain – [something] much more accessible, obviously, but just the murder mystery and choosing where you want to go and having 22 different endings and just wanting to re-play that story over and over again… I can see that happening.”

Well I’m not sure if many people are on the same boat here. There are a lot of them out there who feels that video games and movies should just remain as it is, seperated. I am one of those who feels the same way. I have my desires of both playing games and watching movies and have no interest in combining them. Even if developers are interested in the idea, I don’t think it will be implemented so soon.

I myself am very interested in Heavy Rain. It is the next game that I will be getting, but I am still waiting for second hand stock. I have played the demo, and all I thought about was that this is a unique gorgeous-looking game that will definitely open up more paths for game designers to take. However, I will never think of it becoming like what Jean-Francois Boivin is imagining. Sorry dude, I’m just not feeling it =(.

agreed. it’s like comparing book stories to directed films. but what jean is talking about is probably the creation of a new type of game format, where integration is more central. sort of akin to what we have with action rpg’s now, as opposed to just action games and rpg games.

Ah I see I see. Well then all the better! For RPG, I hope more games like Persona 3 & 4 will be developed. They are dungeon crawling turn-based games and you have the usual town exploration to get different quests and items. But what I felt they did differently was that apart from doing those things, I can talk to people and build up relationships which is a nice change of pace.

non-linear storytelling is probably the best thing to come to games today. all video games have a limited playlife so it not only extends gameplay, it stimulates our imagination more. the era of console-computers is such an exciting time to live in~
