46,000 Wii Remotes Sold Each Day as Nintendo Identifies Apple as Biggest Competitor

Nintendo has announced that it has sold more than 65 million Wii Remotes in the US since the Wii was launched in 2006. This works out to be roughly 46,000 pieces sold each day.

Come November, owners of those 65 million Wii Remotes will have to buy this or get a Motion Plus.

As highlighted by Nintendo, the console is more catered for party gaming. This is definitely one reason why so many Wii Remotes were sold. The Wii is probably the console where 2-4 players gaming is truly realized. I am referring to multiplayer on the same console, not the meet your friends for Halo night through Xbox live or venture into free roam  for some Posses hunting.

I have to admit that Nintendo really brought social gaming to a whole new level where players can really enjoy a fun experience with their friends right beside them.

Naturally, Nintendo do not see Sony or Microsoft as a threat to its casual gaming throne. Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime told Forbes magazine earlier that he sees Apple’s iDevices as Nintendo’s main competitor now. This is mainly due to the nature of games offered on the Apple App Store which are usually more casual and accessible.

However, Fils-Aime has noted that while the iDevices offer gamers casual gaming on the go, the games available are generally shorter and less in-depth than those offered by the NDS. Citing Dragon Quest IX as example, Fils-Aime is said to have poured 150 hours into the game.

Priced at US$40, Fils-Aime managed to squeeze 3.75 hours of gameplay for each dollar spent.

While I have to agree that I don’t foresee seeing people play games on their iPhones for hours on end (barring those like me who spent hours trying to get 3 stars on Angry Bird and complete the Nightmare mode in Hills & Rivers), I have to wonder why exactly Fils-Aime spent 150 hours on Dragon Quest IX. It is definitely a great game, but to spent the equivalent of more than 6 full days on it when you have other great games like the recently released Kirby Epic Yarn? As COO of Nintendo, you definitely can get a copy of the game right? You have a Wii right?

I am really at a lost here, maybe someone can enlighten me on how those hours can be spent.
