This new PlayStation has been temporarily named as “Next Generation Portable (NGP)”. It was unveiled during the recent PlayStation Meeting 2011 held in Tokyo, Japan.
Key Features
- Multi-touch 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED) as the front display
- Multi-touch pad on the rear of the device
- Dual analog sticks
- Two cameras (front and rear)
- Software titles on small, dedicated flash memory-based cards
- Three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass
- Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity
- PlayStation Network access, including ““LiveArea™”, “Near” and “Activity” log features Trophy Support
- NGP will be able to play PSP titles, minis, PS one classics, video and comics from the PlayStation Store.
I think I’m only interested in the dual analog stick. The other features seem okay and reasonable, though I am curious about the “multi-touch pad on the rear of the device”. I don’t know about you, but I don’t really like it if I had to restrict the way I hold my PSP if the rear touch pad does something important in the game.

I am not a tech guy, but Sony did mention before that this will be “as powerful as the PlayStation 3″. And I’m a little worried about the six-axis capability… I have an iPhone and to tell you the truth, I hardly play games in public that require me to make any motion that may attract attention. But I guess the good thing is most developers probably won’t make use of it. Right…? =/
Well so far this seem promising except that there is no UMD drive, so you can just imagine the number of people complaining about it. Well that can’t be helped, but I am excited to see some tech demos in the future. Maybe we can finally blow up PSP games to full screen without losing much visual quality!
