Final Fantasy XIII - Snow & Serah

We have seen the Japanese TGS ‘09 trailer, and are very satisfied about it. Now, the trailer as been completely dubbed in English, giving us a taste of how the English version of the game will be like.

In the beginning, during the scene with Snow and Serah, their English voices do not sync with their lips. But don’t worry, because after the part with the gameplay montage, the characters’ lips are in sync. I have to say, the localization team did a very good job with that.

However, my main concern is not about the lip sync, but about the English voice itself. I know that no matter how much I complain, it will be no surprise that some parts of the English voices in the game will not live up to the original Japanese voices. But what I hope is that the English voices will not mess up during those emotional moments. Don’t get me wrong though, they are decent as it is, but everybody knows that an emotional scene can be completely ruined by unsuitable voice acting.

I know some of you are more focused on the gameplay, so this is a small matter to you and that is completely fine. Different people have different focus on the different aspects of a game yeah? =). But there are people like me who treat the story and character interactions just as important.

What do you guys think? Are you satisfied with the English dub, or do you feel that some parts must still be revised?

i think square enix needs to work on the facial expressions, even though im sure that will take a long time and this is only the first ps3/360 ff game. eg at 6:55 her face, her eyes don’t show she’s dying. it just looks like her face is normal. but not sure if her expressions match in japanese because the sentence structure is different. i’d still prefer an option of both english and japanese w/ subs.

this is the first i’ve seen the trailer. in the english one, the beginning dubs look like they are off or plain just not matching. the dude just doesn’t match in that scene. and like when the girl says “pretty” and “gorgeous” it’s really just not as natural as the japanese one. character design is also intended to be more japanese so it just seems awkward in mannerisms, like when the girl nodes and says “ah” (something western people tend not to do in the same way). or maybe it’s the way they rendered the scene like fmv vs realtime. but the other scenes are actually well done in both trailers. at least it wont look like an old dubbed chinese movie with mouths moving when they’re not talking.

Yes, I also prefer that I am given a choice to select Japanese/English audio. But the problem is that the localization team went out of their way to make the lip sync for the whole game just for the English voices. So if we change the audio to Japanese, then the lip sync will go wrong, making it kind of weird to look at >.<.

Hmm I’m pretty much with you all the way on this. For some parts the English voices just don’t fit the scene at all, but the second half of the trailer is more or less decent dubbing.

My favourite parts are: Serah saying “huh?” (3:05), and Hope’s dad saying “you’re my son! This is your home”.

My least favourite part is Sazh saying “don’t ask me” (6:11), because it sounds really out of place -.-. He’s better off saying “figure it out yourself!”.
