Gankutsuou (The Count of Monte Cristo)
Episodes: 24
Genres: Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Aired: Oct 6, 2004 to Mar 30, 2005
Producer: Gonzo

Gankutsuou is one of the most overlooked gems of an anime I know. The plot is roughly based on 17th century novel The Count of Monte Cristo. It focuses on the drama and strife of the rich nobility, and the evil it gives birth to. Gankutsuou adds vampires, Aliens, space colonies and even Mecha’s to this classic tale. Why at first this mixture is a bit baffling, and perhaps even offending to people looking for a classical story; I guarantee that this is one of the deepest and well played out series of the last decade.

The plot is far too intricate for me to give much of a coherent plot, but the story focuses on Albert Morcerf, a young and naive aristocrat. During a festival on another planet he happens across the mysterious and rich nobleman Edmond Dantes. Albert becomes so fascinated with the intelligent and strange man that he wishes to introduce him to Earth high society. Albert is Dantes’ naive little fanboy. Unbeknownst to Albert, Dantes is already quite familiar with high society on earth, and is in fact using Albert to get close to his family and friends for revenge.

First of all the animation is amazing!!! It is hard to describe to those who have not seen it, but the characters are a patch work of detailed patterns rather than just drawn. It is very unique, and is the most definitive aspect of the series. Since words can’t do it justice here are some images to explain for me.

While I have heard some complaints that in motion this artwork can strain the eyes, it is very beautiful. There could have been no plot at all, and just the animation alone would have made this an amazing series. I frequently found myself in such awe of the elaborate parties and dresses and houses that I wasn’t even paying attention to what was being said. This meshes well with the actual plot too… because it seems the aristocracy are themselves are so blinded by their beautiful life that they some how can turn a blind eye to the vices and suffering in society.

Putting the artwork aside, most of the characters give off a very strong a memorable feeling. Naturally the Count himself has the strongest personality which draws all the other characters into his plot, but Albert and his best friend Franz are also very appealing.  At times the plot development is a tad bit slow, but it gets much faster and action oriented at the end. It is a very emotional series; I know I ended up crying twice.

In the end the story and characters are just as colorful as the artwork, and this became a very memorable series for me. It is in fact among my top five favorite anime of all time, and I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Pros:

+ Beautiful Artwork
+ Amazing and Emotional Story
+ Interesting Characters
Cons:

- Slow Pace
- Animation can strain your eyes if you watch for long periods of time

@ GNDynames: I haven’t seen that episode of the simpsons xD
But something is telling me no LOL.

@ Rev: I didn’t say it has low scores~ It has high scores everywhere xD
But not as many people have seen it.
For instance~ Death note appeals to the same audience this series would~
But Gankutsuou only have 1/10 the viewers according to MAL xD
It kind of reminds me of Okami… Everyone Loves Okami~ but the sales aren’t there.

The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite novels. So I was naturally inclined to watch Gankutsuou when it aired. However, I was put off by the animation style and stopped watching it. Quite some time later, I decided to try watching it again and it ended up being one of my all time favorite anime series.

For anyone put off by the artwork, watch it anyways. I now think the art style is amazing and gives it uniqueness. Plus there’s the epic plot and futuristic dueling. Revenge is always an interesting topic.

There are no figurines for this epic work of animation. Can you imagine a Haydee figurine, the Count himself or perhaps Pepo?
