PlayStation 3 Sales Increase In Japan
Sales for the PlayStation 3 in Japan skyrocketed, overtaking every other consoles by quite a huge margin. Playstation fans lined up on the launch date to get their hands on the new PS3 Slim. Retailers in Japan has shifted over 150 000 units since the beginning of September. I can think of 3 obvious factors that could help with the rise in sales:
- The launch of the PS3 Slim. This is not just in Japan though, because other countries are reporting the same thing. I guess Sony made the right choice of lowering the Slim’s price =).
- Japanese LOVE their Gundam! =D Apparently, Namco Bandai has released yet another Gundam video game for the PS3 on September 3, 2009. It is Kidou Senshi Gundam Senki: Lost War Chronicles. On it’s first week, 178 000 copies were sold, topping the Japanese software chart. This will definitely give some Japanese a reason to buy a PS3.
- A combination of the previous 2 factors. A PS3 Slim bundle was also released, and it includes the Lost War Chronicles video game.
Here are the number of units sold for each console in Japan:
- PS3 – 151,783
- DSi – 60,419
- PSP – 22,184
- Wii – 21,557
- DS Lite – 8,309
- Xbox 360 – 6,827
- PS2 – 3,001
Look at the pie-chart for this week, and compared it to the previous week where the PS3 was last in place for console sales!

Wow! Well it’s about time their sales increased…. hopefully the PS3 Slim will make up for the deficits they’ve had in the past since the system came out. I don’t think it will be the next PS2, but it won’t be as hard on the company as it has been of late. Go Sony! lol

The DS is still overrated everywhere. No matter when I look, it’s always selling lots of units, be it the DS Lite or DSi variations.
Oh well, a victory for the PS3 is worth celebrating. Woohoo

PS2 is still in the pie chart! XD
It sure looks like good news that PS3 Slim is going well. I hope it will be more competitive than its fatter self now. Btw there are two Gundam games known as Gundam Senki. One is called Lost War Chronicles which is a PS2 game, whereas the PS3 one has a long English title “Gundam Battlefield Record 0081″, which we simply called it Gundam Senki. However I think that the latter is influenced by the success and style of Lost War Chronicles, which is apparently a good game that didn’t get a release outside Japan.
