Valkyria Chronicles 2 - Gameplay Footage

Valkyria Chronicles 2

Valkyria Chronicles 2 for the PSP is the sequel to the first Valkyria Chronicles game for the PS3. Until now, we have only seen a trailer, a handful of screenshots, and some character concept arts. Now, Sega has released 2 gameplay footage for our viewing pleasure!

The first video showcases the Assault Infantry class, featuring Jerry. This class seem to be more of the run and gun type. Looking at how he is not afraid of rushing in front of an enemy, it shows that the Assault Infantry class probably has a decent amount of defense.

The second video showcases the Scout class, featuring Avan. This class seem to be more of the sneaky type. As seen in the video, Avan had to slowly work his way towards the enemies while running from cover to cover. Judging from Avan’s movements, like hiding behind cover and lying flat on the ground, the Scout class’s defense must be quite low.

Sega promised us that Valkyria Chronicles 2 will be a bigger game than the first, and it seems that this is true.

In the first game, there were only 5 classes: Scouts, Shocktroopers, Lancers, Engineers, and Snipers. In the sequel, there will be 35 classes in total. This is thanks to the new branching class system. As you can see from the picture, Avan can be branched out into either 1 of these 2 sub classes, and then further branched out into other sub classes.

I am really happy with how Valkyria Chronicles 2 is progressing. Sega has managed to capture the look and feel of the first game and then further enhance it despite the technical limitations of the PSP. Valkyria Chronicles 2 will be released in Japan around Winter 2009.

    DAM U SEGA FOR NOT BRINGING IT TO THE PS3. GAHHHHHHHHH THE RAGE. F*CKEN PISSED OFF!!!!!
    If i am the VC fanboy I’m truely, I would buy the PSP just for this game. LOL

    @M
    Borrow it from Zen, she still haven’t started. >_>

    Hmm… that’s not what i expected from the info we had before about the game. I may just invest in this game now. It seems like the Assault class is just like the Shocktroopers. I’m not too sure about having even MORE classes to add to the roster though, it was tough enough with only the 5 in VC . It might add more flexible gameplay… if you can call it that, but i liked having the fewer units to work with. As for capturing the feel on VC 1…. i’ll give them that. It seems like the PSP still manages to surprise me with the quality of the graphics you can get on the system.

    So… i guess i’ll invest in this game, but i need to finish the first one before then. lol The darn Desert mission is kicking my butt. XD

    @bluesnow - sorry about that! I’ll keep it in mind for future posts =)

    @kurando - I think they may be keeping the usual 5 main classes, and then the remaining 30 are sub classes from the new branching class system. Still, it feels like quite a pain to decide on what path you want each character to take to bring out the squad’s maximum potential… =(

    It’s for PSP only ? -_-;;

    @M - you can get it from zen and then I will play it on your PS3 =)

    @Optic - I read from GiantBomb.com that the reason they wanted to bring it to the PSP was because there were more PSP owners than PS3 owners in Japan, so they wanted more people to be able to play the game. Its a bummer for PS3 owners, but I’m sure this is not the end for you guys =). I feel that there is quite a high chance for the next game to be on the PS3 =).

    @Saku - Unfortunately yes =( unless Sega decides to port it over to the PS3, this will remain as a PSP exclusive title.

    I have a feeling that it will still go to PS3, pretty dumb to make it on the PSP only.

    The latest chart of PS3 Slim sales increasing must change their mindset! ;)

    @zenical - PC anyone….? XD yeah i too feel that its more logical to make the third game a PS3 title.

    Looking forward to VC2, it’s just too bad it wasn’t for the PS3. At least I’ll have a portable VC game with me now.

    If they implemented all those subclasses in VC1, it would have been all the more amazing. I wonder if they debated putting more classes in the first game while they were still making it? Anyways, I hope VC2 includes appearances/playable characters from the first game.

    As for VC1, my squad of scouts is unstoppable. ^^;

    @guuzen: Oh i see. Well that would make it more confusing for me to know which units are the best for my party. I think the idea is good, but it could get frustrating with all of the sub-classes available.

    @Zen: hey… did you get my email?

  • Optic said:

    @guuzen
    That still doesn’t change the fact I won’t get to play the psp version unless sega imports the psp version on the PS3 as well, which is highly unlikely as the psp and PS3 engine is completely different. A direct port is just not possilble. :(

    @Reltair @kurando - It could be that Sega is experimenting with the sub classes, so they feel that it is better to try it out on the PSP first? Personally, looking at the positive receptions of the first game, I am quite surprised that Sega is making this sequel on the PSP. Usually when a franchise starts with next-gen consoles like the PS3, sequels will most likely be on the PS3 as well, then PSP will be left with the prequels and spin-offs. Oh well, lets just hope Sega know what they are doing >.< .

    @Optic - Yes i totally agree with you. Now the only solution for you is to borrow a friend's PSP and then play it that way =S. Just like how I'm borrowing zenical's PS3 to play VC1 >=D. Haha kidding kidding ^_^
