It seems that SNK is still going strong with their Metal Slug franchise. This 2D side-scrolling shooter’s first game dates back to 1996. Now, in 2009, they are announcing a brand new addition to their franchise called Metal Slug XX. Their debut trailer features some gameplay footage and also some information about the game.

Players will be gunning through 7 stages with a selection of 6 characters: Marco, Tarma, Eri, Fio; and Ralf, Clark from King Of Fighters. The game will be featuring something called the Combat School, where you will be able to take on 70 mini missions, all of them probably taking place at the different locations in the campaign. This is nothing new though, because I remember playing Combat School way back in Metal Slug X on my PlayStation 1. The game also features 2-player ad-hoc multiplayer, which is definitely for the campaign, but may not apply to the Combat School. The game seem to be keeping its 4:3 aspect ratio, judging from the borders at the sides of the screen.

Metal Slug XX will be released on December 23, 2009 only in Japan. Currently, there are no news about it getting an English release, but I would say that it is highly possible =).
