Xbox Pirates Banned From Own Hard Disks

Remember that one fine morning a certain number of pirates were banned from Xbox Live. Apparently that wasn’t just it. The banned users are now unable to access the hard disk! Installation of games is not impossible for the banned users..

Xbox Pirates Banned From Own Hard Disks

Here are the details of what the banned users are experiencing:

Firstly, and most obviously, you cannot connect to Xbox Live on this console any more. This means no more game updates (aka title updates), XBLA games, marketplace content, netflix/sky player and so on. There is no way around this, all online capabilities are now disabled PERMANENTLY.

Hard Drive installs are now disabled on the banned console. This means any disk-based games you have will no longer play off of the hard drive.

There is no way to fix this, that functionality is simply gone from the banned 360.

Windows Media Centre functionality is disabled. It is still possible to stream video/music content via the video library.

So, in summary:

Your Banned 360:

* Cannot go on Xbox Live

* Cannot install games to the HDD

* Cannot use Windows Media Centre extender

* Cannot be used to get achievements from backups without corrupting your profile

Now this sucks a lot. I just have to say they deserved it XD. There is no free meal in this world! Until Microsoft comes up with another plan to increase console sales(maybe get a blu-ray drive for the console?), they will lose most of their customers as many are joining the PS3 side for games’ sequels. I am not a Xbox hater or PS3 lover, but I feel that I made the right choice in purchasing the PS3! And yes even though I fork out a lot of cash for an original copy of the PS3 game, I still feel the money paid is worth it!

    Wow. That’s pretty harsh.

that’s why you should never be stupid enough to do illegal things when you connect to parent companies, like xboxlive when you’re pirating off them. it’s like calling up microsoft and asking why your cracked win7 doesn’t work. you deserved whatever comes your way when you walk the fine line. at least they’re not pulling off lawsuits through IP addresses.

now, whether microsoft is a crook for it’s marketing practices, that’s some separate biz’nz

With Nana Mizuki and HOCCHAN LIVES coming out on Blu-ray, it’s more than worth it. xD

Wow its about time the people that do stuff like pirating etc. are very annoying.

  • zenical (Author) said:

    @ Snark: But they really deserve it.. Pirates are enjoying games like no tomorrow! D;

@ atmchino: Yeah totally true. If you’re using pirated products, please don’t connect to the net to tell the companies you are using a fake copy! I still can’t help but smile a bit at this news.. I feel like they totally deserve it. They mod the consoles to play pirated games and have no region-issues with the games, but now.. they can’t go online, and they can’t access their own HD. LOL.

@ Optic: Xbox should have a blu-ray drive to solve all problems

    @ Donyea: Piracy kills :(

@ David: I don’t owe a Xbox console, and I am not interested in MW2, haha. Yes my loss but I’m not going to be sad over it XD.

so u think thats to purchase something that all control of the said purchased should be taken away from you. say if somone wanted to know how the xboxed worked bought one and took it aprt and changed the firmware to suit him. or puts the linix distro on it does that mean that he should be banned from a service for curiosity about learning about his own product ?

  • atmchino said:

curiosity? how many people buy consoles so they can look at the insides? those that do have no reason to go online with it. And those who go online with it, more than 95% of the time are looking to pirate games and play them on an official server. if you want to change the firmware or OS, that’s your business. but going online with a hacked/modded console is a completely different story. especially since going online and playing with others would be unfair, since the service is supposed to connect consoles that are not modded.

xbox live has terms of service as well, which is a legally binding contract that consumers agree to. you should be lucky they aren’t taking to lawsuits on individuals.

The fact is, you can be as angry at pirates as you want. You can say, oh ban these cheats, kill them all, ra ra ra……but you forget one thing….disabling the hardware itself from features NOT COVERED IN THE TERMS OF USE I RELATION TO LIVE is ILLEGAL!

You can can someone from Live! sure. That is your service and you make it clear when they sign up they can be banned.
BUT YOU CANNOT physically cripple the hardware from NON LIVE RELATED FEATURES.
Nowhere in the TOS does it state they can cripple hardware.

    Who broke the law now?

  • LILBRO1062000 said:

going online with your different os is like going to a different country. yes you may look different but that’s no reason to cast someone out. Hacked xbox’s are xboxs.

    uh, how about, no.

    #16 2nd paragraph
“Microsoft reserves complete and sole discretion with respect to the operation of the Service. Microsoft may, among other things: (a) restrict or limit access to the Service; (b) retrieve information from the original Xbox, Xbox 360 console, personal computer, and any connected peripheral device used to log onto the Service as necessary to operate and protect the security of the Service, and to enforce this contract; and (c) upgrade, modify, withdraw, suspend, or discontinue any functionality or feature of the Service, any game or other content available or accessible through the Service, or any hardware or software associated with the Service or with an original Xbox or Xbox 360 console, or personal computer, from time to time without notice, which may involve the automatic download of related software directly to your original Xbox, Xbox 360 console, or personal computer, including software that prevents you from accessing the Service, playing pirated games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices.”

again, “Microsoft may…(c) upgrade, modify, withdraw, SUSPEND,or discontinue ANY FUNCTIONALITY or feature of the Service…or any hardware or software associated with the Service or with an original Xbox or Xbox 360 console…which may involve…[and] including software that prevents you from accessing the Service, playing pirated games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices”
    http://www.xbox.com/en-US/legal/LiveTOU.htm

legally, your ass belongs to them if you break their terms. of course, thousands of people could challenge this in court but i doubt they’ll win. not to mention, the district attorneys of the United States would be prosecuting them if it was really illegal. seeing as the issue is fairly new, that could happen (the issue is very sticky, just as internet regulation is very sticky) but it probably won’t. legal interpretation of that contract says otherwise. you breach the contract you agree to, you are bound to the terms of violation stated in that contract. ignorance is no defense. you can’t argue that they had no right when you said they do.

Everyone steals at some point. Even content on this site violates licenses. Fuck off, piracy doesn’t kill. “Stealing” from a fucking corporation like Microsoft isn’t bad at all. Go and download all their software right now!

  • GNdynames said:

The irony of some comments posted here here is rather stunning. Let’s get one fact straight here:

Stealing is wrong, period. No one disputes the fact that shoplifting could get you thrown behind bars, yet stealing software is suddenly A OK and you get pissed at them letting you go lightly? There was a case where a college student was fined 700k for downloading music a while back.

    “Piracy doesn’t kill”

I know for a fact that if someone steals all of my school notes my immediate reaction would be to lacerate that person with my shinai without a care of how many splinters I leave in him and how many shinais I end up breaking (kendo practioners carry spares at all times anyway) and worry about what happens later.

That is all. To those who are whining. THINK, THINK for one god damned second. This is beyond what facepalming can express. WOW. Be glad MS isn’t actually filing lawsuits. If you really have the balls, go file a lawsuit against MS, let me know so I can finally have an excuse to watch TV.

I like how article mentions words “you can’t.” Nothing is impossible for hackers LOL. And that is pretty stupid move on the part of Microsoft.

If I put a new stereo in my car does that make me a criminal? If I modify the engine does that kill? If I take apart my xbox and shove it piece by piece up my >>>>? It is no one’s business but mine unless you live in a socialist or communist country I do not or at least it is not one yet. Does anyone think before they say anything? Corporations that miss use money and power to influence politics and copyright laws will kill for a profit. Wal-shop owning 49% of a child labor factory in china not illegal and is in no way responsible for that company’s actions if not in direct management but non the less killing and maiming real people. Microsoft practices anti competitive actions all the time in almost every country just Google it, EU still has them in court. They care nothing about laws and will manipulate any government with money to change laws look at the USA’s new copyright protection laws did anyone but a bunch of companies have any input. Government for the Corporation of the Corporation by the Corporation and please don’t be so dumb to think that this is D or R rant they both live for the money and the power not the people. Piracy is freedom so please support you local pirate and long live the free people, the rest can live in the comforter of a corporations guarantee.

@ LILBRO1062000: well it’s not wrong to change the firmware to suit yourself, but think about what the pirates are doing. They are modding the console to suit themselves, and still using it to go online. It’s like using a pirated product and going online to allow them to detect that you are using a fake copy etc.

@ atmchino: exactly, thanks for the backup ^^

@ getabetternickdude: can’t really make out what you are saying with all the grammar errors.. Do polish up before raging here next time.

@ LILBRO1062000: Hacked xboxs are still hacked xboxs.

@ A guy: haha. Piracy won’t die, not ever.

@ GNdynames: These commentors are just xbox fans or something.. I actually have the common sense to not go online with any software or pirated product I use.. not that I use them now.. XP.

@ vonWachtstain: Haha. thanks. Microsoft should do something to gain the trust of their customers. Like improving the consoles region games or something

@ I see idiots everywhere: The example of taking apart the car and comparing with the taking apart the Xbox is totally irrelevant. In addition I can tell that you do not have much knowledge that most of your words are spelled wrongly. In fact I can’t even understand at half of what you are talking. LOL. While I have nothing against piracy and Xbox and whatever, I do find that Microsoft did the right thing in banning the pirates. You should know that you shouldn’t connect online when you are using a pirated product!
