Xbox Disappeared In Japan, 2009

I don’t own a Xbox console, and neither do I hate the console. What surprised me was this particular read on the Xbox vanishing in the year of 2009 in Japan! Look at the chart in the picture carefully, and you can see that the green slot representing the Xbox 360 vanished in 2009!

Xbox Disappeared In Japan, 2009

This colorful graph from the TV Tokyo news shows console sales in Japan from 2005 to 2009. Each platform is color coordinated, and there is a color key in the corner. The gray box that reads その地 means “Other”.

Xbox Disappeared In Japan, 2009

As seen in 2008, Xbox 360 is still in the sales tally, but in 2009, it completely disappeared from the charts! At least the PS2 is still surviving!

Frankly speaking, I think that the sales of the Xbox 360 hasn’t been doing well that it wasn’t enough to even get onto the sales tally. Do you own a Xbox 360 console?

I happen to own a xbox 360. Solely for xbox LANs, Halo series and other Xbox 360 exclusive games. I plan to get a PS 3 though eventually. People in Japan are probably selling off their xbox 360 due to lack of popularity of just losing interest perhaps.

The funny thing is, I bet most of those XBox 360 sales from 2008 were from Tales fans nabbing Tales of Vesperia when it released around October of last year. Vesperia was supposed to be released exclusively on the 360, so die hard fans probably thought they had no choice but to buy that console. But unfortunately for them, the game re-released for the PS3 this year in a sort of “surprise” by the company. Those 360’s are probably gathering dust somewhere now…

I can only guess that a similar phenomenon occurred for the release of Trusty Bell on the 360 a couple years ago too. Aside from these games, I don’t recall any other J-RPGs for the 360 out there…

Japan hates the 360 I guess?

But every other console/handheld looks to have dropped in sales for 2009 as compared to 2008 with the exception of the PS3.

I guess the Slim kept the sales of the ps3 going.

@ Shazzsteel: Maybe the lack of games on the Xbox that resulted in the disappearance of the Xbox. Haha.

@ LadyUsada: A cookie to you! I read that up while doing this post too. I didn’t know that sales would be affected THAT much by games, then again, it could be because of the games. For me I will continue supporting the PS3 because it serves as a gaming console and as a entertainment set. ;)

    @ M: Economy fail in 2008-2009 :(

    @ Qing: I don’t have a Xbox! XD
