Phone Made of Wood

Cellphones are essentially something you can’t live without. Just last week, Docomo announced that it is producing a mobile phone made with surplus wood of trees. How awesome and strange is that?! XD

Docomo Wood Phone

The authentic cypress wood body of the prototype, which is named TOUCH WOOD, features excellent durability and resistance to water, insects and mildew thanks to special three-dimensional compression molding developed by Olympus Corporation. Conventional natural wood is not suitable for use as mobile phone bodies because they tend to wear out quickly.

Each TOUCH WOOD handset will have their own distinctive grain patterns and natural colouring. So you won’t have a phone that looks like someone’s else! Maybe, only the design :P. The attractive part about this TOUCH WOOD handset is that no artificial colors or paints are used. It’s like having a wooden shelf in your palm! ^_^Also, the cypress retains its original natural appearance and aroma.

I love the smell of wood. Do you? With wood now being used as a product for your phone, I wonder what’s next. Glass? XD.

A mockup of the TOUCH WOOD handset will be exhibited at ITU Telecom World 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland from October 5 to 9 and CEATEC JAPAN 2009 at Makuhari Messe, Chiba Prefecture, Japan from October 6 to 10.
